IPU combines sophisticated materials research with the development of tool concepts and flexible production units. By doing this, IPU is able to assist with the manufacturing of components on a microscale in both plastic and metal.

IPU uses micro discharge machining (μ-EDM) in the production of tools for micro injection moulding of micro fluidic systems and for cold forging of small metal components, fibre lasers for micro welding and cutting, robot technology for handling and assembly, as well as micro milling and electroforming.
