MACHINE STIFFNESS DETERMINES THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT

When using cold forging, components often are inaccurate although the tools have been made with utmost precision. Usually, these deviations can be attributed to the deflection of the press.  

 

The press deflects due to non-symmetrical loads, and this is reflected directly in the quality of the formed product.

Knowledge of press stiffness allows for compensation for the deflections, and better product can be achieved. By doing this, expensive machining or rejection is avoided.

Knowledge of the stiffness of the press also allows for optimisation of the tool life, thereby reducing the number of production breakdowns and tool costs.

IPU-Manufacturing has available the most complete equipment in the world for measuring press stiffness under both vertical and horizontal loads. This enables to provide a complete description of the press using a flexibility matrix containing 36 elements, which can be seen as the “fingerprint” of the press.

From the press manufacturer’s point of view, knowledge of the press stiffness is a competition parameter that proves that the press is well-documented and comparable to those of other manufacturers. From the point of view of the cold forger, knowledge of the press stiffness makes it possible to choose the right press in the plant, enable optimisation of the positioning of the tools on the press table and finally make demands on the press manufacturer when purchasing new presses.
