The design of a manual control unit for nursing beds took place in close collaboration with the users, Invacare EC-Høng and Klaus B. Dyhr.

Multiple design models were produced and presented to users for testing and comments.

Ergonomics formed the basis for a functional and user-friendly design.

Ergonomics and its effect on the final design

One example of how ergonomics affects the design of a product can be seen in a product, which intrigues the sense of touch. It has indentations and protrusions on the back and between the pushbuttons for gripping comfort, which makes the manual control unit easy to use without users having to look at it. Furthermore, a soft and warm type of plastic was selected for the product.

The advantages of massive user inclusion was that they seemed to like the manual control unit and were able to correctly operate and adjust their nursing bed while making use of all the built-in functions of the bed.
