Man-machine interaction

User friendliness has become increasingly important as a competitive parameter. The days are over when products sold on technical performance alone. However, product operation is invisible and therefore difficultly handled as a design object.

Four fundamental elements mould how the product is operated: 

 

  • Product. The product obviously has a direct effect and is based on further development in relation to existing and competing products.

  • User. The designer cannot put himself in the user’s place, which is why user involvement is important in the design process.

  • Task. Do you need to be able to call the fire department, because your house is on fire, or are you calling your boyfriend who is riding on the train? These two situations call for different methods of operation.

  • Environment. Being on a train may greatly influence how the product is operated.
