The most important product qualities are decided in the concept development phase. This is also the phase where the majority of the costs are decided. The purpose of the course is to bolster the course participants in their daily work on developing product concepts.

The course focuses on enabling the participants to:

• understand the terms and nature of the concept phase
• formulate product goals and specifications
• create, develop and evaluate a number of alternatives for product concepts in a limited amount of time
• feel comfortable communicating product concepts using sketches and drawings

The course is intended for marketing, development, engineering and production professionals, primarily in the mechanical and mechatronical industries.

The duration of the course is usually three days. The course is adapted to the individual company, and one of the company’s development tasks constitutes the basis for the course.

The course is made up of a line of brief presentations on theories and approaches, reviews of examples, exercises on methods and techniques and discussions and reflection on engineering in concept development.

The teaching staff is made up of IPU staff with experience in concept development projects.
